Earth Day 2018

Feliz dia de la Tierra 2018! Happy Earth Day 2018 everyone!
Just got back from cleaning up the local trail down the canyon. Beautiful over cast day today.

While planting this Capulin tree (Prunus salicifolia) I grew from seed along the trail, I couldn't help but ask myself.... "would I be insane to think that any other day of the year has more significance than today?" well of course I would.....

....everyday should be earth day.....

The KT4 "K" style Stove-Oven_updated

T minus 3....2......1......
Blast off for the latest "rocket style" stove-oven by KT.
I don't think this actually qualifies as a Rocket stove because I don't have the burn chamber/riser insulated, but I'm calling it that anyway.

Albeit, this 4th manned mission of the KT4 "K" style stove has lived up to its expectations. Up top is a vintage stainless steel beer keg, sliced in half, its re-used 4" steel tubing, closing door ports, a stainless grid below the burn chamber (about the middle of the K) and a pull-out ash tray in the ignition port. The ignition port could be used as a second (turbo!) burning port I think with the addition of a 1/2" air shelf inserted.

In this pic I didn't have the steel grate on, but was using a custom made pot support from rebar.....
I have not yet tested this as an oven as I still need to come up with a heat diffusing plate, so as not to burn my fiddles.....😋

Here it is on first take-off. The burn port door is a must! With that door closed I get almost twice the flame as all air is then passed thru the ignition port below. You have much more temperature control with doors added.

Some construction photos....un amigo ayudando...

The ash tray below.....

and here's video action.....

Once again, I highly recommend this type of cooking device to anyone who's interested in saving firewood and/or using small sticks to with. Will keep you updated with the oven when I get a chance.
From Mission Control.....that is all.

***update***
Here is an updated pic showing the new brick insulation....works even better...

New rental house

Big news....we found another house to rent in town.
We took 2 weeks to casually move our stuff to the new house 4 blocks away.
We have more space and like the "open-ness" of the house. The kale and collard trees transplanted fine.
Here are the pics.....

Stay tuned for more......

Toucan in the backyard!

So for the second time I have confirmed we have toucans in the area.
But this time I have photo-evidence!
On this rainy day I was able to get a couple shots of this presumed Collared Aracari toucan. They aren't very good photos but here they are, click to enlarge.

Catemaco Trip

Our January 2018 trip to the Catemaco and Los Tuxlas region was wet and cool, but at least it wasn't a scorcher. Some of the northernmost tropical rain forests are found here. Films like Medicine Man and Apocalypto were filmed here. In fact, here's a video and pic of the Eyipantla Falls where Jaguar Paw takes the leap over....

Scored some Loofah from a nice old lady there too....

Not too far from the town itself, we found a nice camp spot on the shores of Lake Catemaco. A jungle setting where we saw toucans and scarlet macaws.
Here's a pic of the town from the lake.....

We did have some nice days so on this one we decided to go for the boat tour....

passing by bird island....
and monkey island....crazy red-faced guys...

After a week or so at Catemaco we headed over to another nearby smaller lake called Laguna Encantada. Camped out at Yambigapan. It was a nice place to camp and the family very friendly....

Its a really serene lake mostly surround by forest......

there are some small waterfalls on a nearby walk....

hydro-generator nearby.....

Then on to the coast .....the coast of Veracruz is very laid back, quite unlike the coast of Florida! Nobody's there!! There's some trash of course, but hey, gotta take the good with the bad.

a very beautiful spot near the lighthouse at roca partida...

These are, if I'm not mistaken, a different kind of Ceiba, Ceiba aesculifolia.....

our own private beach for a cool drizzly morning....

then onto the rain forest to check out another great waterfall....

We met some very cool people who let us stay at a friends house while they were way and use there outdoor kitchen and bath...the luck never ends...

Hope you enjoyed this new post, stay tuned for more, including our excellent trip to Tepatlaxco......
bye now    😉
