Ribadeo to Oviedo

Hola Family, Friends and Fellow Travelers, here we are again with another chapter of KnJ's travel Blog!

Today we head from the Galician coastal town of Ribadeo to Oviedo, the capital of Asturias.
Starting our 4th week of the trip, we find ourselves in a small cabin in the small town of Otur. Its very small but has a kitchen, dining room, bathroom & a tiny bedroom.
(Click to enlarge pics and please leave your name if leaving a comment so I know who you are)

The grocery store was straight out of my nightmares, next to a fertilizer plant, the whole place stunk. But we did find some things to eat. Oh how we miss the Mexican markets! Here you have to bag and weight your own veggies. A friendly local helps us out...

We're here for two nights, so we don't let the rain stop us from our daily hike. We head out early to a forested area near a beach to find a waterfall.....

Unfortunately we couldn't find it, but still had a good hike with a picnic to boot!

The next day we hike it to another beach and find caves with flowing water...

The sand had an impressive, unusual shine to it....

We enjoyed our stay in rural Otur, but it was time to head out on the bus to Oviedo. We were not sure when or if a bus would come this way, but after an hours wait it showed up. Hungry, we made lunch on the way.

After a couple hour bus ride, we arrive in Oviedo...we hoof it to our reserved apartment....

Its a nice modern one on the second floor, in a great location....

Oviedo, established in the 8th century and known for its architecture, a magnificent ancient cathedral and its dedication to higher education through the University of Oviedo, is a gem.

Alfonso II, King of Asturias, relocated his capital to Oviedo around the year 790. Around 800, the main Cathedral was built on the site of a previous basilica. This night-time shot isn't bad, but doesn't do it justice. It is spectacular!!

The impressive city of Oviedo from up on a nearby mountain hike....

Enjoying the homemade Vermouth .......

The architecture, parks and art in Oviedo are outstanding....it has a very high quality of life....

KT and Woody (In honor of Woody Allen for his 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.....
There are hundreds of sculptures scattered in every corner of the city ......

There's an old, long former train tunnel under the city that connects to a big park....an excellent shortcut to the park! It was a fantastic idea to reuse this as a pedestrian walkway....

Another stunning building.....

A rest stop on one of our daily hikes along the old train route that heads out of Oviedo. Although there are an increasing number of Brown Bears in Spain, this is probably my closest encounter....what the!!!

You all take care and be well. Keep an eye out for our next post....

XOXOXO

Lugo to Pontenova to Ribadeo

 Hey All,

Another update here on our travels in Spain. After the week in Lugo we decided to head north to A Pontenova on the Rio Eo. This river is the boundary between the two autonomous communities of Galicia and Asturias. There are still trout and salmon in the river. (Click to enlarge pics)

But we were here to do some biking and hiking...

The old rails to trails ride from the town along the river was well worth the trip...it has a few tunnels along the way....

From A Pontenova we were off on the bus again to Ribadeo and the northern coast of Spain!!

The town of Ribadeo, Galicia and the mouth of the Eo River. The far side is Asturias.....

We reach northern coast of Spain and the Bay of Biscay! Guau!

The bridge over the river to Asturias....

The incredible Cathedrals Beach....

We extended our stay in Ribadeo by a couple of days because we had such a nice, well priced modern apartment, enjoyed the old town and walking along the waterfront...

Hope you enjoyed the pics. See you on the next update as we backpack towards the capital of Asturias.....Oviedo.

Regards,

KnJ
